Tale of Gamers - Week One

Tale of Gamers - Week One

The Challenge Begins

It's the 1st of July, which means it's time to start Tale of Gamers. The Old World club at my local shop (Entoyment) are running a 4 month long Tale of Gamers event aiming to get 2000 points painted and on the table, 500 points per month starting today.

As part of the challenge I thought it would be fun to blog the process on a weekly basis, updating my progress and goals.

Our TO Matt has written a brilliant framework for the group to follow:

Our lists for month one are built around the Foray rules published by Rob, and we're also using the Renegade Legacy Pack, so I'm going to be playing Skaven.

500 Points of Rats

So for month one I've written a 500 point Skaven list to get painted and hopefully get a few games in with. I wanted to run this as a very narrative and fluffy army, painting a wide variety of rats, but I'm also limited in hero options with the foray rules and can't afford a Grey Seer, so I've started with a Warlock Engineer as the general, running a full Skryre list.

I've played a few games at 500 points already, usually taking a block of clanrats and then filling the rest of the list with Gutter Runners, so I'm looking forward to a more interesting list, especially with the FAQ nerf to poison that puts a bit of a dampener on my blocks of sneaky rats.

Week One - Starting Out

My first big decision was old models vs new. I've got a full metal vintage Skaven army that I was painting up for the Crown of Command challenge, but unfortunately had to drop out and shelve, so I have a few painted rats but not many. The other option is to paint the brand new sculpts that have recently been released for Age of Sigmar. I put this to a vote in the club chat and new rats won out over old, so that sealed the deal.

I picked up a box of the new weapons teams and a box of Skryre Acolytes, dusted off my old Warp Lightning Cannon sprues, and finally opened up a couple of Skaventide boxes to get my Clanrats and Jezzails.

My resin printer is currently out of action, so I got a friend to run off a big bag of cobblestone base toppers, and started building up the list.

I've already painted up most of the models for both of the Skaven Spearheads for Age of Sigmar, so I'm going to keep on the same theme for my Old World army, which will let me stick some of the AoS models in round to square converters and bolster my forces if I need to in the future. My Grey Seer for Spearhead is below, next month I'll be painting another one on a square base rather than re-basing this one!

Next week's post will hopefully see a fully built 500 point force, and the first paint going on to my clanrats. As it's the first week and I've not included any painting in this post, I might do a mid-week post to cover off the first bit of painting ahead of next week.

I hope you enjoy the journey, and I also hope that blogging this keeps me true and I actually finish an army for a change!
